Ice on my driveway

Epochs of Rock and Time

A majestic and lively overture that shows off a community orchestra.

This work was commissioned by the Scarborough Symphony Orchestra in honour of their 30th anniversary. It is a grand showpiece for the orchestra - almost a miniature symphony. My concept for the piece comes from the Scarborough Bluffs and their geological history. It opens with a majestic passage depicting the bluffs with the wind and waves of the lake crashing about them. A middle slow section transports us back to the last ice age when the bluffs were entombed beneath a great glacier. As temperatures rose, the ice melted leaving behing the bluffs in their present form. With the disappearance of the ice comes the appearance of humans and eventually the Scarborough Philharmonic! This brings with it a dance and a rollicking conclusion to the piece.
